Botox & Dysport

Peninsula Glow Medical Spa

You wake up in the morning, look in the mirror, and what do you see? Wrinkles around the corners of your eyes. Deep folds running from your nose to your mouth. Creases that seem imprinted on your forehead. These lines affect almost everyone eventually and are primarily the result of facial expressions made throughout the years — from a smile to a laugh to the frown that creeps across your face every time you see them in the mirror. Expression lines are difficult to avoid and just as difficult to accept. Perhaps you have many or only one, but it’s possible to treat them no matter the number.

Botox and Dysport are injectable neuromodulators that stunt muscle movement to smooth unwanted lines and reverse the effects of time. Offered at Peninsula Glow Medical Spa in Monterey, CA, regular Botox or Dysport treatments can be an empowering self-care routine that will help you feel and look years younger. If you’re interested in scheduling a consultation to receive a personalized skincare treatment plan from one of our expert injectors, please give us a call at (831) 233-3143.

What Are Neuromodulators? What Can They Do for Me?

Neuromodulators are injectable treatments that minimize the appearance of wrinkles using a purified form of the neurotoxin botulinum toxin Type A. Botox, and Dysport are two of the most well-known and reputable neuromodulators available. When botulinum toxin Type A is injected as a limited dose into a muscle, it prevents it from receiving nerve signals that trigger it to contract. Without these signals, the muscle relaxes, and the skin above it doesn’t crease — meaning wrinkles, lines, and folds cannot form and minimize over time.
The wrinkles that form from muscle movement are known as ‘dynamic wrinkles.’ Even though they’re caused by natural facial expressions and may result from something as pleasant as laughter or a smile, they can take a toll on your self-confidence and make you appear older than you are or feel. Neuromodulators are a convenient way to reduce expression lines like forehead furrows, frown lines, or crow’s feet.

Who Is the Ideal Candidate?

Botox and Dysport are safe treatments for men and women of numerous ages and any skin type. Anyone considering one of these injectables should be in good health and have realistic expectations. During your initial consultation at Peninsula Glow Medical Spa, our NP injector will review your medical history and current health and discuss your desired results. She will also explain the similarities and differences between Botox and Dysport and help you select the one that will benefit you most.

Neuromodulators have many cosmetic benefits. If you’re struggling with any of the following signs of facial aging, Botox or Dysport can help:

  • Creases near the eyes often referred to as “crow’s feet”
  • Lines on the bridge of the nose, known as “bunny lines”
  • A dimpled chin
  • Creases along the forehead
  • Vertical neck bands
  • Frown lines in between the eyebrows or glabellar lines
  • A widened or tense jaw from teeth grinding

Dysport and Botox in Monterey:
What’s the Difference?

Botox and Dysport are both FDA-approved injectables that are similar in what they treat and how they work. However, there are a few differences that may influence your choice. These differences include:

DOSAGE

The molecular size of Dysport is smaller than Botox, which means it spreads more easily. This makes Dysport better at treating large areas, such as the forehead, where spreading can be beneficial. However, Dysport is also more diluted than Botox, which means more doses are needed to achieve equal results. Patients seeking to treat small areas, such as glabellar lines, are often better off with Botox, while patients with larger cosmetic concerns are recommended Dysport.

ONSET

The effects of Dysport may be noticeable quicker than Botox. Improvements may be seen two to five days after a Dysport treatment, while it may be four to seven days before results are seen with Botox. Patients who are looking to stave off wrinkles quickly before a special event may find Dysport particularly useful.

DURATION Although there have not been sufficient studies to confirm differences in longevity, Botox is anecdotally said to last longer than Dysport. Results for either neuromodulator typically last approximately three months. Our injectors will discuss their past experiences with patients who have used these products to give you an idea of how long your results may last.

The Neuromodulator Treatment

The treatment process for Botox and Dysport is generally the same. After reviewing your cosmetic concerns and deciding which neuromodulator best suits your needs, our injectors will identify which muscles need to be treated. The product is administered via a small needle similar to an acupuncture needle. You may experience a brief stinging sensation during the injection process, but this is normal and only lasts a short while. A cold pack may be applied to the area before injection to help mitigate any pain. Our experienced injectors will be careful to administer enough of the product to inhibit muscle movement so that skin creases are reduced, but not so much that it creates a “frozen” expression. Treatment length varies depending on how much Botox or Dysport is used and how many areas are treated. The procedure typically lasts 20 to 30 minutes.

Recovery and Results

Treatment with Botox or Dysport requires no downtime. Often referred to as a ‘lunchtime procedure,’ neuromodulator injections are well-liked because the treatment can be done quickly, and you can return to work or daily activities immediately afterward. There may be some redness or swelling around the injection site, but this is normal and only temporary.

How long it takes for your results to reveal themselves depends on which product you choose. Your results may last anywhere from three to four months before you will require a touch-up to sustain the benefits of your treatment. Plan to schedule follow-up injections three to four times a year if you’re interested in maintaining your results.
