Diet, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle can help to tone and firm the body, but often stubborn pockets of fat under our chin still remain. While it may seem impossible to get rid of this hard-to-target fat, there is now a minimally-invasive solution that can do what diet and exercise can’t: Kybella.
Kybella is a treatment that can help diminish small pockets of fat under the chin, creating an improved profile and reduced fullness in the upper neck. This excess fat under the chin, also known as submental fat, is one of the most challenging concerns to target since it frequently does not respond to traditional fat loss methods such as diet and exercise.
Kybella is an injectable medication that is a man-made form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring substance that helps our bodies absorb dietary fat. Kybella treatments are fast, have little downtime, and destroy fat cells permanently. Kybella is minimally invasive, safe, and FDA-approved. Kybella is best known for treating the double chin, but we also use it on “off label” areas such as the abdomen.
The active ingredient in Kybella injections is synthetic deoxycholic acid, an acid that is naturally made by our own bodies in the gut. Deoxycholic acid aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fats from food. When deoxycholic acid is injected beneath the chin, it can destroy diet- and exercise-resistant fat cells, providing a noticeable reduction in submental fullness and improved contours around the chin, jawline, and neck.
Once Kybella is injected, the deoxycholic acid only targets fat cells, leaving all other cells unaffected. Kybella destroys the membranes of these fat cells so they can no longer store and accumulate fat. There is no need for further Kybella treatments once your desired outcome is achieved. The fat cells that are treated will never come back.
If you’re bothered by stubborn fat under your chin or have what is often referred to as a “double chin,” then Kybella may be the right treatment for you. Many people are prone to storing extra fat under their chin, no matter their age, sex, or weight, and this unwanted fullness can make you appear older or heavier than you are. With Kybella, you can treat this stubborn fat for good in a safe and minimally invasive manner.
What Causes Submental Fat?
Submental fat, also known as submental fullness, is a gathering of excess fat under the chin. Submental fat is often genetic and something you have your whole life. Other times, submental fat does not start to show until you get older or gain weight. Submental fat is notoriously difficult to eliminate through diet and exercise.
How Many Kybella Treatments Do I Need?
The typical number of Kybella treatments recommended is six, with four to eight weeks in between sessions. However, the number of treatments required depends on your body and aesthetic goals. The majority of our patients receive all six treatments, and most patients experience visible results after two to four treatments.
IS KYBELLA PERMANENT?
Yes! Once the fat cells are injected with Kybella, they are destroyed and can no longer store or accumulate fat. After your treatment plan is completed, no further treatment is needed.
HOW LONG DOES A KYBELLA TREATMENT TAKE?
A Kybella treatment can take around 15 to 20 minutes, during which multiple small injections are administered under the chin.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SEE RESULTS AFTER A KYBELLA TREATMENT?
The results from your Kybella treatment will be noticeable four to six weeks after injection, with the final and most dramatic results showing eight weeks after your final Kybella treatment.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER KYBELLA?
After your Kybella treatment, there may be slight swelling, bruising, redness or numbness in the treated area that should subside within one to three days. In some cases, it may take up to one month for the area to completely return to normal.
IS KYBELLA PAINFUL?
There is little pain or discomfort during Kybella injections. Anesthetic cream and ice can be used to numb under the chin before your injections. Some patients describe a hot and uncomfortable feeling immediately after the injection, but this usually subsides within a few minutes. Some patients report that the treatment is uncomfortable, but in general, Kybella is well tolerated.
WHO IS NOT A CANDIDATE FOR KYBELLA?
You should not have a Kybella treatment if you have infections in the area, are pregnant or are breastfeeding. If you have had cosmetic procedures or surgery on your face, neck or chin, it’s important to tell your clinician during your consultation to make sure you will tolerate Kybella.
HOW MUCH DOES KYBELLA COST?
The cost of Kybella is different for everyone. Each treatment includes two to four vials, depending on the amount of submental fat and desired outcome of the patient.
